Our Mission:
Friendship That Gives aims to empower lives, foster meaningful connections, and create lasting impact through compassion, community, and education. Guided by our core values, we are committed to serving individuals and families facing life's challenges—whether they stem from health conditions, financial barriers, or other circumstances.
We believe in unity and strive to build supportive networks that unite people while raising awareness and providing resources for critical causes like Parkinson’s Disease, Amyloidosis, and other community-driven needs.
With a focus on integrity, empowerment, and measurable impact, we are dedicated to creating programs that inspire change, equip individuals with the tools to thrive and strengthen the communities we serve.
The Why
The inception of Friendship That Gives was inspired by a deeply personal and transformative journey rather than a single moment. As I watched my parents struggle with Parkinson’s disease and Amyloidosis, I witnessed firsthand the immense physical, emotional, and mental toll these diseases take—not only on the individuals battling them but also on their families.
Through this experience, I saw the overwhelming confusion and frustration that arise from navigating a healthcare system that often lacks culturally competent resources, particularly for Black families facing these challenges.
What struck me the most was the isolation many families, including mine, experience. We constantly searched for doctors who truly understood our needs, struggled to find clear and accessible information, and longed for a supportive community that could offer both empathy and guidance. It became evident that the problem wasn’t merely a lack of awareness but a critical gap in advocacy, access, and equitable care.
For Black families, health disparities and systemic barriers make early diagnosis and effective treatment even more challenging to achieve. I couldn’t just sit back and watch this happen; I felt a profound personal responsibility to act—something more than just raising awareness, but something that could make a difference. Thus, Friendship That Gives was born: a mission-driven organization to honor my parents’ legacy and ensure that no family facing these diseases has to navigate this journey in isolation. This work is about more than raising awareness; it’s about building a supportive, informed, and empowered community. It’s about advocating for better healthcare, inclusive research, and improved outcomes for all families affected by these diseases.
To every individual and family facing the challenges of Parkinson’s disease or Amyloidosis—you are not alone. At Friendship That Gives, we see you. We honor your journey. We stand with you. Whether newly diagnosed, a long-time warrior, or a caregiver supporting a loved one, your strength, resilience, and courage inspire us daily. We understand that these diseases impact more than just the body—they touch every facet of life: relationships, hopes, faith, and identity.
We are here—to raise awareness and foster a community of support, understanding, and action. We are committed to ensuring you have access to the education, resources, and compassionate care you deserve, regardless of where you live, what you look like, or what challenges you face.
Our message to you is simple yet profound: You are seen, valued, and worthy of compassionate care and bold advocacy. We are here to walk beside you, uplift your voice, and fight for the equitable healthcare and support every family deserves.
Together, we will create a future in which no one faces these diseases alone—where hope, health, and healing are within reach for all.
With friendship, compassion, and unwavering support,

Jonathan L Dotson
Jonathan L. Dotson is an internationally minded nonprofit executive, patient advocate, strategist, and servant leader dedicated to improving lives through education, advocacy, and community engagement. As the Executive Director of Friendship That Gives, Jonathan has devoted his life’s work to addressing health disparities, advancing health equity, and empowering underserved communities through innovative programming focused on Amyloidosis, Parkinson’s disease, mental wellness, caregiving, and chronic illness awareness.
The inspiration behind Friendship That Gives is deeply rooted in Scripture. In the Bible, Jonathan, the son of King Saul, formed an extraordinary covenant friendship with David—one built on loyalty, courage, sacrifice, encouragement, and unconditional support. That biblical example serves as the foundation of the organization’s mission: to cultivate authentic relationships that empower individuals, strengthen communities, and transform lives through service. Friendship That Gives exists to embody that same spirit of unwavering friendship by creating opportunities that educate, inspire, connect, and uplift people across every season of life.
A proud graduate of Morehouse College, Jonathan’s leadership philosophy is grounded in faith, integrity, compassion, and servant leadership—values first modeled by his parents, Albert E. Dotson, Sr., and Earlene P. Dotson. Their example instilled within him the belief that true leadership is measured not by titles, but by one’s willingness to serve others with excellence.
Throughout his distinguished career spanning both the nonprofit and corporate sectors, Jonathan has led organizational growth, operational excellence, strategic partnerships, community development initiatives, and transformational programs that have impacted millions through education, public awareness campaigns, advocacy, and outreach. Under his leadership, Friendship That Gives has expanded nationally and internationally while developing meaningful collaborations with healthcare providers, advocacy organizations, educational institutions, faith communities, corporations, and community leaders committed to improving health outcomes and quality of life.
Among the organization’s signature initiatives is the Fashionably Healthy Community Conversations Empowerment Series, an innovative platform that brings together healthcare professionals, patient advocates, researchers, caregivers, community leaders, faith-based organizations, and corporate partners to educate, empower, and inspire communities disproportionately affected by chronic and rare diseases. Through engaging panel discussions, evidence-based health education, patient storytelling, resource navigation, and community collaboration, the series equips individuals and families with the knowledge and tools needed to advocate for themselves while promoting health equity and improving outcomes across underserved populations.
Additional initiatives—including caregiver support programs, youth leadership development, mentorship, health advocacy campaigns, and community outreach—reflect Jonathan’s unwavering commitment to creating spaces where education, inspiration, hope, and action intersect.
Jonathan’s commitment to service extends well beyond Friendship That Gives. He has served in numerous leadership capacities with 100 Black Men of America, Inc., is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has served on the Board of Directors for Kristi House, and has mentored emerging leaders, students, and nonprofit professionals throughout his career. His advocacy has also reached national and international audiences through speaking engagements, media interviews, published opinion pieces, patient advocacy initiatives, and strategic collaborations designed to reduce disparities affecting historically underserved populations.
His work is also deeply personal. Having walked alongside both of his parents during their health journeys—including serving as a caregiver to his father during his battle with Amyloidosis and continuing to support his mother living with Parkinson’s disease—Jonathan understands firsthand the physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial challenges faced by patients and caregivers. These experiences continue to fuel his unwavering commitment to ensuring that no family navigates these journeys alone.
Jonathan believes that education creates empowerment, advocacy creates opportunity, partnerships create impact, and faith provides the foundation for lasting transformation. Every initiative he leads reflects his desire to build healthier communities, stronger leaders, and a more compassionate world.
Inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”, Jonathan continues to answer that question each day through purposeful leadership, servant-hearted advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to making a lasting global impact—one life, one family, and one community at a time.
